March 2023 Update
A note from Leela Grace, owner and teacher at Rose City Folk School:
Three years into the pandemic, I have been forced to re-think my business. In the face of housing instability, inflation, the ever-rising cost of living, the complexity of life with a young family (including a new baby!), and the continued challenge of work that is centered around gathering people in small spaces, I have chosen to give up my brick and mortar location in NE Portland, Oregon. For now, I will be offering lessons and classes online via Zoom, pop-up workshops and events around the region, and in person options through a new space-sharing collaboration with Mosaic String Academy in SE Portland!
Starting in April 2023, anyone anywhere will be able to take a variety of fun clawhammer banjo and Appalachian clogging classes offered via Zoom! And…I’m excited to announce the return of the Rose City Folk Chorus and by-ear harmony singing classes fully IN PERSON for the first time in three years (with remote options and COVID-19 precautions)! Private lessons in banjo, singing, and clogging are also available on an ongoing basis…
It has been a tough three years and this queer mama musician is deeply grateful for all of the support and love I have received from so many of you as I struggled to keep my family afloat through the shut-down and then welcomed our new little one last year! In the midst of a global pandemic, a world literally and figuratively on fire, and a seemingly endless array of injustices mounting, I am raising my children and seeking small, imperfect ways to make a difference. I hope to use my music and teaching to uplift my fellow humans, fight for the most vulnerable, and bring intersecting and often far-flung communities together in harmony. Please join me!
